Hjem is a quarterly magazine about the rooms people actually live in. When Helena Brask took over as editor in 2022, she asked us for a relaunch that would slow the reader down — fewer pages, longer stories, photographs given room to breathe. We have art-directed every issue since. Issue 12, On Slow Mornings, is the one that finally looked the way the first brief sounded.

The system

Fewer pages, longer looks.

The old Hjem ran forty short features an issue, each fighting for the reader with a new layout. We cut that to eleven. Every story now opens on a full-bleed photograph and a single line of display type, and nothing else on the spread — no pull quote, no sidebar, no caption competing for the eye.

The grid is twelve columns, but the body text only ever uses five of them. The empty seven are the point. They give the photographs somewhere to rest and the reader a margin to think in. Captions sit in the outer column in Geist Mono, set small enough to read as notes rather than headlines.

The masthead is drawn in Fraunces at its largest optical size, with the J’s descender lengthened to sit under the E. It is the only drawn letterform in the magazine. Everything else is set, not designed — the restraint is what lets the one flourish land.

“Our readers used to skim the magazine in a café. Now they tell us they keep it by the bed.”

Helena Brask, Editor-in-Chief

Twelve issues, one register.

Since the relaunch, Hjem has moved from newsstand to subscription for most of its readers, and the print run has doubled. The poster edition of each cover — printed on the same stock as the magazine, pinned in the shops that stock it — started as a one-off for Issue 04 and is now part of every release.

Issue 12 was selected by the Type Directors Club in 2024. We are drawing Issue 13 now, with the same eleven-story rule and the same seven empty columns.
